Metrobank Group gifts 10,000 families with the “Bags of Blessing”


Amidst the revelry and festivities in line with the upcoming celebration of the Chinese New Year, there is also the reality that there are many underprivileged Filipino families living in depressed areas which do not have access to basic social services.

Thus, the Metrobank Group will embark on a gift-giving drive on select communities, municipalities, cities and provinces in the country. Dubbed as the “Bags of Blessing”, the bag of goods shall be distributed to chosen 10,000 less fortunate families. These include victims of recent calamities brought about by heavy monsoon rains, flashfloods, and landslides in the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and some provinces in Mindanao.

“The Chinese-Filipino business community has been regarded as one of the strong pillars in elevating the country’s economy and as a source of inspiration on values of perseverance, humility, hard work, and compassion. The Metrobank Group wants to take the first step in elevating this joyous celebration as an opportunity to share the fruits of our successes in the industry to our underprivileged brothers and sisters,” says Metrobank Group Chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty.

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary. Dinky Soliman shares, “The DSWD lauds this initiative of the Metrobank Group. This is the first time that a conglomerate owned by a Chinese-Filipino is celebrating the Chinese New Year with a nationwide gift-giving. It is our wish that other companies will also follow the footstep of the Metrobank Group and initiate this kind of activity in the future.”

From February 4 to 10, various Metrobank branches together with the DSWD will be spearheading the distribution of these “bags of blessing” to the underprivileged families in selected ares in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and NCR.

The Metrobank Group has allocated a total of P10 million worth of donation packages for the Chinese New Year gift-giving activity. In a simple turnover ceremony held at the Malacañan Palace, Metrobank Group Chairman Dr. Ty gave the donation in the form of pledge to President Benigno Aquino III. Present during the turnover were DSWD Sec. Soliman, Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Mr. Alfonso Uy, Metrobank chairman Dr. Antonio Abacan, Jr., Metrobank president Mr. Arthur Ty, Metrobank Foundation president Mr. Aniceto Sobrepeña, retired Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, the chair of the Board of Advisers of the Metrobank Foundation and Federal Land president Mr. Alfred Ty.

“With this initiative, we are also affirming that the whole Chinese-Filipino community in the country is united with all Filipinos through this occasion which signifies a new hope and a wish of luck and prosperity for all,” Ty adds.   

The Metrobank Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Metrobank Group, was established by its chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty in 1979. With the theme “Excel. Engage.
