Judges, Corporate Lawyers Briefed on Corporate Rehabilitation
In a bid to spark legislation on corporate rehabilitation in the country, the Metrobank Foundation together with the Philippine Judicial Academy of the Supreme Court of the Philippines recently held the 7th Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Lecture on Corporate Rehabilitation in the Philippines.
The Philippine Judicial Academy, in cooperation with the Metrobank Foundation, Inc., held the 7th Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Lecture on November 24, 2010 at the Court of Appeals Auditorium. The Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair is awarded to outstanding Filipino citizens who have displayed an exemplary record in public service, and who have showed commitment and dedication to the country and its people. It is awarded to servant-leaders who have become a model of ethical and effective public leadership in the country. Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Dante Tinga was awarded for his exemplary record from his days as a legislator representing Taguig for nine years and his untarnished reputation since his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2001.
Justice Tinga spoke before an audience that is composed of judges and lawyers from corporate legal departments of companies. Through his lecture, Justice Tinga traced the history of corporate rehabilitation to the Spanish and Amercan period of occupation in the Phillippines. He also explained why there is a need for the country’s lawmakers to pass a comprehensive law on corporate rehabilitation. Court of Appeals Associate Justice Japar Dimaampo and Dean Eduardo de los Angeles, of the Philippine Judicial Academy served as reactors.
Metrobank Foundation, Inc. president Mr. Aniceto M. Sobrepeña believes that the lecture comes in the most opportune time given the recent world financial crisis. He says, “Understanding the law on corporate rehabilitation is particularly essential to Metrobank because of two reasons: first, as a leading private sector company, it is important to be a abreast with emerging trends in corporate law; and second, as a foundation, it is part of our corporate social responsibility to contribute in the understanding of the law that is the cornerstone of good corporate governance, which in turn is the anchor of corporate social responsibility.”
More than a decade ago, the Metrobank Foundation established Professorial Chairs in the areas of law (PhilJA), medicine (UST and UP Manila), and public service and governance (ADMU), guided by the belief on the importance of continuing research to further strengthen the key professions. These lectures, when tackled and shared by chosen distinguished chair holders, are also aimed at educating the citizenry, especially on public-interest issues. Metrobank Group chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty advocates that the Foundation plays an active role in supporting initiatives that will strengthen the pillars of our government.
The Metrobank Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Metrobank Group, was established by its chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty in 1979. With the theme “Excel. Engage. Empower.” the Foundation has promoted a culture of excellence among Filipinos through its various programs, such as the Search for Outstanding Teachers, the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence, The Outstanding Philippine Soldier, Country's Outstanding Policemen in Service, the Metrobank Math Challenge, and College Scholarship Program. The Foundation also has a grants program that assists NGOs and government in the fields of education, healthcare, and the arts. Metrobank Foundation celebrates Filipino excellence and presents wellsprings of hope in the future of our nation.
