Sustaining an Environment for the Arts
October 2007
With theme, “Your Environment Shapes You”, this year’s winning pieces highlights the interplay of the environment and use of design elements to enhance the aesthetic value of each of the pieces.
Great art is not created in a vacuum. From the moment the seeds of inspiration take root in an artist’s mind, all throughout the creative process, until it is finally unveiled and appreciated by an audience, a work of art is shaped by individuals, communities, and the environment in which they live – and vice versa. Great art inspires people to uphold noble aspirations and follow their dreams. It embodies a society’s values and imparts a sense of history to future generations. And, more than just mimicking or complementing the beauty of nature, art has developed pragmatic practices for sustaining the environment.
Recognizing the significant impact of art on a society’s culture and environment, Metrobank Foundation continues to foster the development and appreciation of Philippine Art through the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) program for painting, sculpture, architecture and interior design. Implemented in partnership with Metrobank Card Corporation, Federal Land, BluPrint magazine, United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) and Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID), MADE places equal emphasis on the visual and allied arts, and has adopted the advocacy “Your Environment Shapes You.”
Youthful perspective
Established as the Young Painters’ Annual in 1984, MADE has earned a reputation for being one of the most sought after amateur art competitions in the country. Counting among its alumni such noted artists as Noell El Farol, Roberto Feleo and Elmer Borlongan, the competition serves as a launching pad for up-and-coming young artists. With the creation of a category for sculpture, MADE expands public consciousness by focusing on a less-appreciated and oft taken-for-granted art form.
By giving young artists a free hand in the selection of their entry’s theme, the competition recognizes the experiences and concerns faced by the current generation. This year’s Painting winners share a predisposition for introspective thought, depicting abstract notions like faith, spirituality, and the unfathomable recesses of the mind. Meanwhile, the current batch of sculptors recognized by MADE concretize their concern for social issues and historical events through terracotta and cast metal.
Environmentally-responsive design
As one of the most extensive arts programs in the country, MADE keeps abreast with global issues and trends. In response to the growing concern for the environment and the challenge of sustainability, MADE integrated the concept of sustainable design into the architecture and interior design competitions, which were established in 2004. Striking a balance between environmental, social, economic and aesthetic concerns, sustainable design is poised to transform the way we live.
The winning works in Architecture and Interior Design lie testament to the talent and ingenuity of Filipino designers. Faced with spatial constraints, climatic concerns and other environment-related conditions, our designers have masterfully created blissful habitats for Filipino families. The only arts program recognizing achievements in architecture and interior design, MADE aims to provide a nurturing environment for the development of the allied arts.
