Metrobank Foundation Celebrates the Creativity of Budding Artists and Designers in MADE Awarding Ceremonies

The Metrobank Foundation once again celebrated the creativity of young Filipino artists and designers as it recognized the winners of the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) Competition in Painting, Sculpture, Architecture and Interior Design during the awarding ceremonies and exhibit opening on September 18 at the Le Pavillon in Pasay City.

“With 25 years of celebrating the creativity of young Filipino artists and designers, the Metrobank Foundation, through MADE, remains steadfast in its commitment to honor the outstanding talent of our youth,” Metrobank Foundation president Aniceto M. Sobrepeña said. “We hope that this recognition,” he continued, “will bring their careers to greater heights, in the same way it did to our past awardees.”

A pioneering art competition established by the Metrobank Foundation in 1984, MADE awarded a new batch of promising artists and designers who is set to flourish in the Philippine and international art scene.

The winners in the oil-based medium on canvas category of the painting competition are Leonardo C. Onia, Jr., grand prize; Leoniel D. Cerbas, second prize; and Cornelius G. Acasio, third prize. On the other hand, the winners in the water media on paper category are Danilo P. delos Reyes, Jr., grand prize; and Salvador C. Sierra, special prize.

With the tagline “The Best Designs for the Least of Society,” DVC is a special project undertaken by Gawad Kalinga and Metrobank Foundation which aims to raise the standards of excellence in building communities for the poor by engaging fourth year and fifth year architecture, interior design and landscape architecture students to design a GK village.

For the sculpture competition, the winners are Teodorico R. Cumagun III, grand prize; and Rochelle Albert G. Manuel, special prize.

Interior Designers Karina Diana Cortez and Pauline Joy Cuevas are the grand prize and special prize winners, respectively, of the interior design competition; while the grand prize winner of the architecture competition is Architect John David O’Yek.

Glass sculptor Noell El Farol is this year’s winner of the Metrobank Prize for Achievement in Sculpture (MPAS), a special recognition for mid-career sculptors.

The winners also received cash incentive from the Metrobank Foundation. The grand prize winners got P200,000 each; the special prize winners had P150,000 each; while the second prize and third prize winners for the oil-based medium on canvas category of the painting competition took home P170,000 and P150,000, respectively.

Among those who graced the event were renowned artist Betsy Westerndorp and Ambassador Thierry Borja de Mozota of the Republic of France who served as guests of honor. Members of the MADE final board of judges, among them national artists Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera and Napoleon Abueva, were also present to show their support to the winners.

Former MADE winners, such as Salvador Ching, Duddley Diaz, Karen Flores and Dan Raralio, among others, also came to honor this year’s awardees.

Top business executives, government leaders, members of the diplomatic community, art patrons and renowned artists also joined the Metrobank Foundation in celebrating the creativity of young, promising Filipino artists.

Now on its 25th year, MADE has served as the launch pad of contemporary artists, architects and interior designers. It advocates through the arts, a creative and sustainable environment for holistic human development, thus its tagline “Your Environment Shapes You.”
