Metrobank Foundation Fetes Budding Artists and Designers
The Metrobank Foundation celebrated a new batch of young and talented artists and designers during the recently-concluded awarding ceremony for the 2010 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) Competition held at Le Pavillon in Pasay City.
A total of ten visual artists and designers, who are set to make a name for themselves and flourish in the Philippine and international art scene, were honored in a culminating celebration that underscored their excellence as Filipino artists.
The winners in the oil / acrylic on canvas category of the painting competition were Reynaldo Samson, Jr., grand prize, for his piece “Ang Hindi Matapus-tapos na Ebolusyon, at ang Walang Katapusang Paghahanap sa ‘Di Matagpu-tagpuang Langit;” Mary Grace Tenorio, second prize, for her entry “Tanikalang Bakal;” and Rolf Domini Campos, third prize, for his work “Unfinished Bout.” For the water media on paper category, also under the painting competition, winners were Lester Rodriguez, grand prize, for his masterpiece “The Hidden Agenda;” and Kathleen Yeo, special prize, for her entry “Patungo.”
Marc Vincent Cosico was the grand prize winner in the sculpture competition for his piece called “Superhero Complex,” while Dennis Ticao was awarded the special prize for his work “Riders of the Storm.”
Interior Designer Maureen Grace de Jesus was the grand prize winner in the interior design competition for her sustainable design solution entitled “Rise of the Fallen”, while Interior Designer Heidrun Milan was accorded the special prize for his entry “Eco-lectic Reflection.”
Architect Miguel Angelo Mañosa was awarded the grand prize in the architecture competition for his entry “Private Residence.”
Each winner received a glass trophy by sculptor Noell EL Farol and a cash prize. The grand prize winners took home P200,000 each, while the special prize winners had P150,000 each. The second prize and third prize winners for the oil / acrylic on canvas category of the painting competition got P170,000 and P150,000, respectively.
“We are delighted to have been able to discover such promising talents among today’s youth,” said Metrobank Foundation president Aniceto “Chito” M. Sobrepeña. “It is our earnest hope that our MADE winners for this year will continue to pursue their craft and motivate aspiring artists and designers to do the same, contributing to the development of Philippine art and design.”
Aside from the awarding ceremony, the evening was highlighted with the unveiling of the MADE exhibit which showcased this year’s winning pieces together with the semi-finalists in the painting and sculpture competitions and the entries in the architecture and interior design competitions. A number of these art works were also for sale.
The exhibit likewise served as a venue for interaction between guests and MADE honorees who engaged frequently in conversations about the artists’ winning pieces.
The event gathered a vibrant mix of artists, art patrons, business and government leaders, diplomats, society mavens and cultural advocates who joined the Metrobank Foundation in giving recognition to the young artists and designers. Ambassadors Luca Fornari of the Republic of Italy and Liu Jianchao of the People’s Republic of China graced the celebration as guests of honor.
For the past 26 years, MADE has been discovering young and talented artists and designers, helping them launch and enhance their artistic careers. The pioneering art competition of the Metrobank Foundation, MADE lists the names of now established up-and-coming masters such as Bobby Feleo, Elmer Borlongan, Mark Justiniani, Duddley Diaz, Dan Raralio, Noell El Farol, Alfredo Esquillo, Jr., and Gabby Barredo, and promising architects and designers such as Architects Noel Tan, Michael Peña, Jericho Adriano, and John David O’Yek and Interior Designers Marybeth Tabaquin, Jasmine O’yek Sy, Wilhelmina Garcia, April Frigillana and Karina Diana Cortez among its roster of winners.
MADE advocates through the arts, a creative and sustainable environment for holistic human development, thus its tagline “Your environment shapes you.” This annual competition is presented in partnership with Federal Land, Inc., United Architects of the Philippines, Philippine Institute of Interior Designers, Chamber of Furniture Industries of the Philippines, BluPrint and LifestyleAsia
