2011 Metrobank Foundation Chairholder Atty. Harry Roque Speaks on International Human Rights Law

The Metrobank Foundation together with the Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJA) of the Supreme Court of the Philippines recently held the 8th Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Lecture in International and Human Rights Law.

The Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair is awarded to outstanding Filipino citizens who have displayed an exemplary record in public service, and who have showed commitment and dedication to the country and its people. It is awarded to servant-leaders who have become a model of ethical and effective public leadership in the country. Atty. Harry Roque was awarded for his exemplary record as a human rights lawyer and as a professor in the UP College of Law. He is also currently a member of the PhilJA’s Department of International and Human Rights Law.

Atty. Roque spoke before an audience that is composed of judges, lawyers, and legal luminaries. Through his lecture, Atty. Roque explained the legal nuances to the Philippine Ratification of the Rome Statute in the International Criminal Court (ICC). He also opined that ratifying the Rome Statute in the ICC will help end impunity not just in our country but also in the rest of the world. Former UP College of Law Dean Raul Pangalanan, a member of PhilJa served as the reactor.

In his message, Metrobank Foundation, Inc. president Mr. Aniceto M. Sobrepeña says,  “The Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Lecture is our humble contribution to the overall vision of the judicial branch to serve our people through the rigorous study of various aspects of law.”

More than a decade ago, the Metrobank Foundation established Professorial Chairs in the areas of law (PhilJA), medicine (UST and UP Manila), and public service and governance (ADMU), guided by the belief on the importance of continuing research to further strengthen the key professions. These lectures, when tackled and shared by chosen distinguished chair holders, are also aimed at educating the citizenry, especially on public-interest issues. Metrobank Group chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty advocates that the Foundation plays an active role in supporting initiatives that will strengthen the pillars of our government.
