2005 Metrobank
Art and Design Excellence (MADE)
Cebuano Architect Awarded National
Plum
October 6, 2005
Noel K. Tan, an architect born,
raised and currently based in Cebu
City, was recently awarded the grand
prize in the architecture
competition under the Metrobank Art
and Design Excellence or MADE
Program. His entry, entitled
“Fusion”: The Tan Residence, bested
other designs submitted for the
first staging of the contest, which
is a new category in the
Foundation’s long-running arts
program.
His project, a 3-storey residential
structure in Cebu, is a product of a
synthesis between native cultural
elements and responsiveness to
climate conditions, between the
vernacular and new ideas, between
progression and conformity, and
mostly, between tradition and
modernity.

A graduate of the University of San
Carlos, Tan’s concept and design are
modern, suited for the fast-paced
lifestyle but remains sensitive
towards cultural and environmental
factors. A first time contender in
any architectural design contest,
Tan plans to continually produce
designs that create awareness of the
fusion of architecture’s benefit to
people as well as the environment.
He believes that this would produce
a better-built environment for
people to live comfortably and
securely.
Ambassador Rubens Fedele of Italy
together with Atty. Charito Cruz,
President of Cabinet Spouses
Association personally awarded the
trophies to Architect Tan, together
with the other winners of the other
three categoriesn namely painting,
sculpture, and interior design. Each
awardee received P150, 000 in cash
and a trophy especially designed by
artist and former Metrobank winner
Noell El Farol.
Architect Jose Siao Ling, who was
named Architect of the Year in 2004
by the Professional Regulation
Commission, led the panel of judges
that selected Tan from among this
year’s nominees. Other members of
the distinguished board were
Cultural center of the Philippines
president Mr. Nestor Jardin, and
renowned Architects Philip H. Recto,
Robert S. Sac, and Maria Cristina
Valera-Turalba.
Following the opening day exhibit, a
series of lectures were given by Mr.
Duddley Diaz, Prof. Racquel Florendo,
Architect Prosperidad Luis, Mr. Noel
El Farol, Leo Almeria and Architect
Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa. The
lectures were part of the continuing
effort of the Metrobank Foundation
to promote and cultivate art
awareness.
In 2004, the Metrobank Foundation
launched MADE after 20 years of
awarding talented young painters
under the Young Painters’ Annual.
With the expanded arts program, the
Foundation also aims to recognize
the outstanding works of young and
promising sculptors, architects and
interior designers. Just like the
Foundation’s previous art
competition, MADE aims to provide a
venue for talented artists in
various disciplines to express their
creativity and provide them with
incentives to further hone their
craft. |
