2005 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE)

Prize for Achievement in Sculpture Awarded
October 6, 2005

Mr. Duddley Diaz, a Filipino sculptor based in Italy, received this year’s Metrobank Prize for Achievement in Sculpture (MPAS), an award of distinction under the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) Program of the Metrobank Foundation. Ambassador Rubens Fedele of Italy together with Atty. Charito Cruz, President of Cabinet Spouses Association personally awarded Diaz with a medallion and a cash prize of P 150,000 for his outstanding body of artwork and significant contributions to the development of Philippine sculpture.

A graduate of the University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts, Diaz further honed his craft at the School of Sculpture of the Academia di Belle Arti in Florence. He was likewise a recipient of the Freemen Full Fellowship Grant of the Vermont Studio Center Johnson in Vermont. In his career, he has staged more than a dozen solo exhibits, both in the Philippines and abroad and has taken part in numerous local and international group exhibitions.

Among the honors Diaz has received is the Special Award for “La Madonna del Popolo”, which is part of the exhibit staged by the Cathedral of Verona in Italy, as well as a Presidential Award as Outstanding Filipino Artist Abroad.

Another award in sculpture was bestowed by Metrobank Foundation. The Metrobank Arts and Design Excellence (MADE) national competition, the expanded arts program of the Foundation, which also includes sculpture, awarded Jan Leeroy C. New, who bagged the grand prize for his work entitled the “Cradle”. Juan Miguel G. Aquilizan, meanwhile, received a special citation for his “Timog, Silangan, Hilaga, Kanluran” (Still Life) or “”South, East, North, West”. New received P 150,000 in cash and a trophy, while Aquilizan got a special citation.

Sculptor, painter and art jeweler Eduardo Castrillo, a Thirteen Artist awardee of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and former President of the Art Association of the Philippines headed this year’s distinguished panel of judges. Serving as members were Mr. Ben-Hur G. Villanueva, Ms. Charito Bitanga-Peralta, Mr. Cid Reyes and last year’s MPAS awardee, Mr. Dan Raralio.

Following the opening day exhibit, a series of lectures were given by Mr. Duddley Diaz, Prof. Racquel Florendo, Architect Prosperidad Luis, Mr. Noel El Farol, Leo Almeria and Architect Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa. The lectures were part of the continuing effort of the Metrobank Foundation to promote and cultivate art awareness.

In 2004, the Metrobank Foundation launched MADE after 20 years of awarding talented young painters under the Young Painters’ Annual. With the expanded arts program, the Foundation also aims to recognize the outstanding works of young and promising sculptors, architects and interior designers. Just like the Foundation’s previous art competition, MADE aims to provide a venue for talented artists in various disciplines to express their creativity and provide them with incentives to further hone their craft.
