2006 Metrobank
Art and Design Excellence (MADE)
Tales from the Artside: A
Foundation’s Contribution to
Cultural Heritage
June 23, 2006
Shaping the future of the nation
might be a prettier sight to see if
the medium was through oil and
canvass, or stone and clay. Whatever
the materials are, it’s undeniable
that art is part of the artistic
soul of the Filipino people.
It
all started in 1984 as the Metrobank
Painting Competition. This
nationwide competition later
developed to become the Young
Painters Annual in 1997 to reflect
the diverse interventions in the
arts. The program was so successful
that it received 888 painting
entries in 2000.
In
2003, the Metrobank Arts and Design
Excellence or MADE was born to
include categories in the field of
painting, architecture, interior
design and sculpture. The result in
these initiatives marked the birth
of a new era in the world of
corporate art sponsorships, and in
2005 the first complete set of
winners were recognized and awarded.
Two decades later and still as
dynamic and innovative as ever, MADE
continues to give recognition to the
country’s artists and fight for the
survival of art in a culture now
full of cynicism. It has evolved
into a paragon of timeless vision; a
testament to social development and
perhaps the grandest legacy in a
nation’s cultural heritage.
Last June 9 and 10, MADE had its
public viewing of entries at the
Fortune Building, Legaspi Village,
Makati City. The public had a chance
to critique and evaluate submitted
artworks, which will later be taken
into consideration during the final
judging. Awarding of the winning
pieces will take place in September.
