Young Talented Artists Named Best

Metrobank Foundation president Chito
M. Sobreña announced that four young
talented painters, two sculptors,
two interior designers and an
architect bested close to a total of
400 contestants from around the
country who joined in this year’s
Merobank Art and Design Excellence
(MADE). In partnership with the the
United Architects of the
Philippines, Philippine Institute of
Interior Designers, Federal Land and
Blu Print Magazine, Metrobank
Foundation has remained steadfast in
its objective of nurturing the
artistic soul of the young
Filipinos.
Winning in the painting competition,
Oil Based Medium on Canvas
category are: Melvin B. Arlegui,
grand prize for his work entitled
“The Throne of a Filipino”; Kirby
N. Roxas, second place for
“Decoding Ethnicity”; and Marvin
Chito L. Natural, third place
for his work, “Outgrown”. Likewise,
emerging as winner in the Water
Media on Paper category is:
Nomar B. Miano for his entry
“The Dominance of Value”.
In the Sculpture category,
Kelly O. Sonio bagged the grand
prize for his work entitled the
“Native Land” and Mervy C. Pueblo
won special citation for her
“Specimen”.
Jasmine O’yek Sy and
Teresita “Tessa” Guevara won
grand prize and special prize plums
respectively, for their individual
works on “The Sustainable Haybol”
and “Verde” under the Interior
Design Category.
As with Interior Design, in its
second year since its inception, the
Architecture Category has
produced its winner in the person of
Arch. Michael T. Peña, for
his “Modern Filipino House” situated
at St. Ignatius Village Quezon City.
Mr. Sobrepeña stressed that the
grand prize winners in all four
categories will receive P200, 000,
while the second and third place
winners for the Oil on Canvas will
get P170, 000 and P150, 000,
respectively. In addition, each
winner will receive a trophy
specially designed by artist and
former YPA winner Noell El Farol,
and special citation awardees will
receive a plaque.
Now on its third year, the Metrobank
Foundation Prize for Achievement in
Sculpture (MPAS) will be awarded to
Mr. Peter T. De Guzman in
recognition for his sustained
outstanding artistic output and
significant contribution to the
development of Philippine sculpture.
De Guzman will also receive P200,
000 cash prize and a medallion
specially designed by artist and
former YPA winner Roberto Feleo.
Distinguished personalities in the
art scene served as judges for the
four categories of the competoition.
For the Interior Design category,
Jose Maria Hubilla chaired this
year’s competition. Other members of
the board are: Gerry Contreras,
Thelma Sioson San Juan, Susan Tuason
and Leo Almeria.
For the architecture category, this
year’s chairperson is
Internationally renowned Arch.
Francisco Mañosa. Other members of
the board are: Arch. Jose Siao Ling,
Arch. Philip Recto, Commissioner
Avelina de la Res, and Arch.
Josefina Ramos.
For the painting category, national
Artist Ben Cabrera chaired in this
year’s competition. Other members
include: Cid Reyes, Susan Fetalvero
Roces, Nestor Vinluan and Alfredo
Esquillo Jr.
As for the sculpture category, a
world renown sculptor, Impy Pilapil
chaired in this year’s competition.
Other members of the board include
Luis Yee “Junyee”, Julie Lluch, Cid
Reyes and Robert Feleo.
MADE winners will be awarded and
recognized in a formal ceremony at
the Le Pavillon, Roxas Blvd. corner
EDSA, Metropolitan Park in Pasay
City. This will be followed by the
opening of an exhibit showcasing the
winning and selected entries from
the different categories.
A lecture series, entitled MADE Art
Exploration Series, coinciding with
the exhibit run, will be held on
September 16 and 18 at Le Pavillon,
admission is free. The lecture will
tackle the four means of expression:
painting, sculpture, interior design
and architecture; resource speakers
of which are people known and well
respected in their respective field.
From September 20-29, the art exibit
will be moved to the ground floor of
the Matrobank Plaza, Gil Puyat Ave.,
Makati City. Exhibit hours are from

MADE was formerly known as the Young
Painters’ Annual (YPA) which has
launched the careers of numerous
painters since 1984. In 2004,
Metrobank Foundation expanded its
arts program to include competitions
for sculpture, architecture and
interior design. |
