Study Visit to Taiwan: International
Understanding Through Exchange of
Ideas
June 23, 2006
Education scholars believe in the
benefits derived from exchange
studies as an effective tool to
broaden knowledge and learn new
skills. In a joint venture to foster
more international understanding
through education, the Metrobank
Foundation and the Center for
International NGO Studies (CINGOS)
signed a memorandum of agreement to
conduct study visits in various
educational institutions in Taiwan.
Under the Metrobank Foundation
Fellowships for International
Understanding Program, it is hoped
that the exchange of information,
ideas and the sharing of expertise
will help both countries in their
attempts to improve its educational
system.

Some observations between Taiwan and
Philippine school systems:
|
Taiwan |
Philippines |
| - Small
number of students per
class (10-21 pupils) |
-
Oversized classes in
most schools (40-above
pupils a class) |
| - Copies
of activities /
exercises/ workbooks
readily available for
student’s use |
-
Teachers can hardly
reproduce copies of
handouts for the whole
class. |
| -
Teaching devices and
aids (eg. Pictures, cds,
charts, equipment) are
provided by the school;
though teacher may
supplement when need
arises. |
-
Teachers provide their
own, although gov’t
sometimes provide
allowances / teachers
kit |
| -
Classroom atmosphere is
permissive; students
speak up their minds and
may ask questions
anytime |
-
Classroom standards
always govern the class;
raising of hands before
asking questions. |
