Metrobank Foundation Honors 56 Graduate Scholars
The Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI) celebrated the graduation of its Class 2010 scholars last April 30 and May 1 through the annual Graduates’ Forum held at the Metrobank Plaza in Makati City. The Graduates’ Forum is an annual assembly of the Foundation’s graduate scholars where they get to meet and interact with their fellow scholars as well as their benefactors. The event also allows the Foundation to hear the scholar graduates plan for the future, particularly on how they intend to give back the gift of education that the Foundation provided them.
Participants of the 4th Conversations: Sharing Sessions with Scholars who Graduated with Latin Honors with Metrobank Foundation executive director Nicanor Torres Jr. who facilitated the discussion (seated at the center), senior program manager Irene Labitad (seated 2nd from left), and program officer Jackie Jalocon (4th from right). This year, a total of 56 scholars graduated from the various scholarship programs of the Foundation implemented together with partner schools nationwide. Out of the 56 graduates, 28 have graduated with Latin honors led by three (3) magna cum laudes and 25 cum laudes.
Aside from covering 100% of tuition and allowances to financially-incapable yet deserving college students, the Foundation’s College Scholarship Program (CSP) also encourages its scholars to build the character of social responsibility and stewardship for their respective communities by encouraging them to participate in community projects that benefit the less fortunate.
“The Metrobank Foundations has always affirmed the critical role of the Filipino youth in nation-building, not only harnessing their potentials by giving them opportunities to have high quality education but also instilling in them the importance of giving back to society,” said its president Aniceto “Chito” M. Sobrepeña.
One of the highlights of the Graduates’ Forum is the session entitled, “Sharing of Insights and Experiences on Social Responsibility.“ The session showcases invited keynote speakers to talk about their experiences on social responsibility and inspire the graduates to contextualize their unfolding professional lives, guide them towards the fulfillment of their careers while heightening their inclination to serve their countrymen. This year, the session was graced by the multi-awarded broadcast journalist Ms. Karen Davila who inspired the scholars with her life story and shared with them some of her memorable experiences in her profession.
“Poverty is not a hindrance to success. It is never an obstacle, but it rather serves as a refinement. We are like gold. It goes through the fire and the hotter the fire is, the better the gold will be. And that’s the way we are. It is not a mistake that you are sitting here, graduating as Metrobank Foundation scholars. It is God’s blessing to you, and it is for you to use it as you move on from here and pursue your dreams,” said Ms. Davila in her message.
Meanwhile, delivering the response on behalf of the Class 2010 scholars, Mark Anthony C. Tolentino highlighted the importance of sharing the gift of education they have received in order to help others. “Let us not stop with our own excellence; it is our turn now to help others to be excellent. We inherit from the Metrobank Foundation a rich tradition of excellence that we are all proud of. But at the same time, let us not forget that we also inherit a rich tradition of helping, giving, and sharing with others,” said Mark who graduated cum laude with a degree in Applied Math Major in Computational Science from the Ateneo de Manila University.
Since 1995, the Metrobank College Scholarship Program (CSP) has been assisting outstanding students in their college education. Over the years, the CSP has produced a total of 777 graduates, more than 500 of whom are now licensed professionals and about 700 scholar graduates working in some of the country’s top corporations. This year serves as a milestone for the program as it celebrates the formal closing of two (2) scholarship programs of the Foundation — Metrobank ACCESS (Assistance for the Completion of College Education for Superior Students) and GRACE (Grants in Aid of College Education) to give way for another program in education that will better serve the most number of beneficiaries.

The Metrobank Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Metrobank Group, was established by its chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty in 1979. With the theme “Excel. Engage. Empower.” the Foundation has promoted a culture of excellence among Filipinos through its various programs, such as Search for Outstanding Teachers, the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence, The Outstanding Philippine Soldier, Country's Outstanding Policemen in Service, the Metrobank Math Challenge, and College Scholarship Program. The Foundation also engages its partners and awardees in different activities geared towards giving back to the society. Through these initiatives, the Metrobank Foundation empowers its awardees and partners to become better citizens of the community. As part of its contributions to help improve health care services in the country, Dr. Ty donated a two-hectare lot along Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, costing about P1.2 billion, that would be the site of a modern tertiary medical center complex. This new hospital, once completed, will have a 1,000-bed capacity, making it one of the biggest hospitals in the country owned by a not-for-profit organization. |
