Metrobank Foundation Holds Professorial Chair Lecture on the Rights of Indigenous People

The Metrobank Foundation, in partnership with the Supreme Court of the Philippines - Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJA), held the 6th Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Lecture on October 21, 2009 at the Malcolm Theater, University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law, Diliman, Quezon City.
Dean Leonen’s lecture was entitled “Law at its Margins: Questions of Identity, Indigenous Peoples, Ancestral Domains and the Diffusion of Law,” which focused mainly on the identity and rights of indigenous people.
The lecture coincided with the celebration of the Indigenous People’s Month in October. In 2005, Metrobank Foundation partnered with PhilJA to foster excellence in the judicial system, specifically through the continuous education of its members. To this end, the Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair was established at the Academy. Since then, chair holders have presented relevant researches on various branches of law. Among them are Justices Oscar M. Herrera, Sr. and Hilarion L. Aquino for Remedial Law (2005); Justice Vicente V. Mendoza, Constitutional Law (2005); Justice Sixto C. Marella, Jr. of the Court of Appeals, Commercial Law (2006); Associate Justice Adolfo Azcuna, International Humanitarian Law (2007); and Dr. Antonio G. M. La Viña, dean of the Ateneo Graduate School of Government, Environmental Law (2008).
The Metrobank Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of the Metrobank Group of Companies established by Dr. George S.K. Ty in 1979.
