METROBANK GROUP SUPPORTS PHILIPPINE
PARTICIPATION IN THE 2010 SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO

April 2010

The Metrobank Group of Companies, through the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), has given its full support for the country’s participation in the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China to be held this coming May 1, 2010 up to October 2010. A total of P12 million has been sponsored by the Metrobank Group, part of which has been provided for the training program entitled, “Capacity Building to Enhance Diplomatic Relations: Shanghai World Expo 2010,” under the MBFI Fellowship for International Understanding. The program engaged 24 young individuals, known as ‘Metrobank Foundation Fellows,’ who underwent moulding by the Foreign Service Institute on protocol, Philippine history, culture, arts, heritage, and tourism including review and re-polishing of their Mandarin skills. The Metrobank Foundation Fellows shall serve as the frontliners during the expo, tasked to showcase what the country can offer to the world in this much awaited international event.

The Metrobank Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Metrobank Group, was established by its chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty in 1979. With the theme “Excel. Engage. Empower.” the Foundation has promoted a culture of excellence among Filipinos through its various programs, such as the Search for Outstanding Teachers (SOT), the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE), The Outstanding Philippine Soldier (TOPS), Country's Outstanding Policemen in Service (COPS), the Metrobank Math Challenge (MMC), and College Scholarship Program (CSP). The Foundation also engages its partners and awardees in different activities geared towards giving back to the society. Through these initiatives, the Metrobank Foundation empowers its awardees and partners to become better citizens of the community. As part of its contributions to help improve health care services in the country, Dr. Ty donated a two-hectare lot along Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, costing about P1.2 billion, that would be the site of a modern tertiary medical center complex. This new hospital, once completed, will have a 1,000-bed capacity, making it one of the biggest hospitals in the country owned by a not-for-profit organization.
