UE Law Students, Professors Briefed on Corporate
Rehabilitation

In a bid to bring law to a wider audience, the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI) together with the Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJa) of the Supreme Court of the Philippines and the University of the East College of Law recently held the roll-out of the Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Lecture on “Corporate Rehabilitation in the Philippines”.

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Dante Tinga, an outstanding UE Alumnus, spoke before an audience that is composed of law students and professors from the University of the East and prominent law practitioners. Through his lecture, Justice Tinga traced the history of corporate rehabilitation to the Spanish and American period of occupation in the Phillippines. He also explained why there is a need for the country’s lawmakers to pass a comprehensive law on corporate rehabilitation.

MBFI president Aniceto M. Sobrepeña believes that the roll-out of professorial chair lecture comes in the most opportune time. He says, “Understanding the law on corporate rehabilitation is particularly essential to Metrobank because of two reasons: first, as a leading private sector company, it is important to be a abreast with emerging trends in corporate law; and second, as a foundation, it is part of our corporate social responsibility to contribute in the understanding of the law that is the cornerstone of good corporate governance, which in turn is the anchor of corporate social responsibility (CSR).”

More than a decade ago, the Metrobank Foundation established Professorial Chairs in the areas of law (PhilJA), medicine (UST and UP Manila), and public service and governance (ADMU), guided by the belief on the importance of continuing research to further strengthen the key professions. These lectures, when tackled and shared by chosen distinguished chair holders, are also aimed at educating the citizenry, especially on public-interest issues. Metrobank Group chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty advocates that the Foundation plays an active role in supporting initiatives that will strengthen the pillars of our government.
