Presidential Adviser Sec. Ging Deles Reflects on the Peace Process

The Metrobank Foundation together with the Ateneo School of Government and Ateneo de Manila University’s Department of Political Science recently held the Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Lecture entitled "Reflections on the Peace Process".

The Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair for Public Service and Governance is awarded to outstanding Filipino citizens who have displayed an exemplary record in public service, and who have showed commitment and dedication to the country and its people. It is awarded to servant-leaders who have become a model of ethical and effective public leadership in the country. Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita “Ging” Deles was awarded for her exemplary record from her days as a peace advocate and social development worker prior to joining the government in 2004 and in 2010.

Secretary Deles spoke before an audience that is composed of students and members of the academe. Through her lecture, Secretary Deles gave an overview of the current state of the peace process of the government, Atty. Cesar Villanueva from Pax Christi Pilipinas and Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chair Loretta Ann Rosales delivered their reaction speeches afterwards.

In his message, Metrobank Foundation, Inc. president Mr. Aniceto M. Sobrepeña says, “We have the responsibility to ensure and uphold peace. In doing so, we protect and uphold democracy that we hold dear. The realization of peace creates an atmosphere of a vibrant economy that promotes development and eventually social equity.”

More than a decade ago, the Metrobank Foundation established Professorial Chairs in the areas of law (PhilJA), medicine (UST and UP Manila), and public service and governance (ADMU), guided by the belief on the importance of continuing research to further strengthen the key professions. These lectures, when tackled and shared by chosen distinguished chair holders, are also aimed at educating the citizenry, especially on public-interest issues. Metrobank Group chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty advocates that the Foundation plays an active role in supporting initiatives that will strengthen the pillars of our government.

This is the third year of the Metrobank Professorial Chair for Good Governance lecture. In 2009, then CHR chair and now Justice Sec. Leila de Lima received the award. In 2010, it was the turn of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner Rene Sarmiento to conferred this award.

The Metrobank Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Metrobank Group, was established by its chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty in 1979. With the theme “Excel. Engage. Empower.” the Foundation has promoted a culture of excellence among Filipinos through its various programs, such as the Search for Outstanding Teachers (SOT), the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE), The Outstanding Philippine Soldier (TOPS), Country's Outstanding Policemen in Service (COPS), the Metrobank Math Challenge (MMC), and College Scholarship Program (CSP) and Excellence in Judiciary Program (EJP). It also supports social development projects through like-minded organizations that have sought to uplift the lives of the disadvantaged groups and marginalized sectors in the society. “Converging to Inspire Change!” serves as the battlecry of the Foundation. After 33 years, it shall continue to uphold values of excellence and champion its chosen stakeholders and the rest of our communities. It aims to strength ties with institutional partners in both public and private sectors such that there will always be a venue to further honor those who are able to reach their highest potential. Today, the Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to remain a leader in corporate social responsibility by initiating and supporting leading edge programs that uplift the lives of our people and inspire the best in the Filipinos.
