Metrobank Foundation Helps Restore
Park
May 10, 2005
On the occasion of the inauguration
and blessing of the new Plaza San
Lorenzo Ruiz in Binondo last April
28, the Metrobank Foundation headed
by its Chairman, Dr. George S.K. Ty
turned over a check amounting to P 3
Million to the City of Manila to
help defray expenses for the
renovation and maintenance of the
former Binondo Plaza.
Dr. Ty along with Manila Mayor and
Mrs. Lito Atienza, and 3rd District
Congressman Miles Andrew Roces
officially opened the plaza to the
public with a ribbon-cutting
ceremony.
In his speech Mr. Alfred Ty, Vice President and Corporate
Secretary of the Metrobank
Foundation, recalled Metrobank’s
humble beginnings at Binondo, reason
why the city is special to the
Metrobank Group. He pledged that Metrobank will further contribute to
the upkeep of the plaza by paying
for the security guards, to patrol
the area, as well as by shouldering
the electricity bill.
The renovation of the park saw its
transformation from a dark, unsafe
and heavily fenced plaza to a
landscaped park, complete with a
statue of the first Filipino saint,
who was a native of Binondo, and a
couple of restored 18th Century
metal fountains. The area is eyed to
become the center of commercialism,
development and culture where major
occasions at Binondo could be held.
Other officers of Metrobank and
Metrobank Foundation who attended
the inauguration were Metrobank
President and Metrobank Foundation,
Vice Chairman Mr. Antonio S. Abacan
Jr., Metrobank Foundation Vice
Chairman Mr. James Go, Metrobank
Foundation President Dr. Placido
Mapa Jr, Metrobank Foundation
Executive Vice President Mrs. Elvira
Ong Chan and Metrobank Foundation
Executive Vice President and
Executive Director Mr. Aniceto M.
