2006 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd
Math Challenge
Breezing Through Math: The Metrobank
Math Challenge Empowers the Youth
With microchips that could churn out
answers to complex equations in a
split second, even hand-held
calculators can make adding such a
breeze. Mathematics has somewhat
been reduced to a push button.
Longhand method of calculations has
long been forgotten, and technology
may well one day replace brain
power.
Not if Math lovers can help it.
without any calculators to aid them
in solving extensive equations,
these young kids, and their passion
for math have continuously inspired
organizations such as the Metrobank
Foundation, the Mathematic Teachers
Association of the Philippines and
the Department of Education to
jointly undertake the
Metrobank-MTAP-DepED Math Challenge
(MMC), the largest Math competition
in the country.
Aiming to improve the quality of
math education, MMC over the past
nine years, has continuously
unraveled young "jewels" in the Math
arena. their objective is for
greater appreciation of a subject
most students dislike, and to
instill the discipline and love of
mathematics.
As Gary Villame, 2003 MMC Champion
points out, "My love for mathematics
has instilled in me many values that
helped me in my quest to excel. I
realize that living life, just like
solving mathematical problems, has
many hurdles and setbacks. but all
these can be overcome if one is
determined to find the best solution
no matter what it takes."
Thankfully, many kids have joined
Gary in his passion and dedication
to the queen of the sciences.
17 regions and 169 (90.37%) of the
187 DepEd Divisions were represented
in this year's competition. In
total, Almost 308,000 student
math-enthusiasts participated, a
remarkable increase of more than
42,000 (16%) from last year's
competition.
Evident in these kids is the passion
to succeed. who knows, probably in a
few years time, our country may well
be topping international
competitions for mathematics,
joining the ranks of high-caliber
nations.
As Aniceto Sobrepeņa , President of
Metrobank Foundation points out,
"These students have inspired us
even more to continue with this
undertaking of discovering
mathematical gems among our youth
for many, many more years to come."
With continuous efforts and with
greater dynamism, the Metrobank Math
Challenge will inspire future math
wizards to achieve greater heights
in mathematics - long hand
method and sans the calculators. |
