Public Schools Dominate
Metrobank Math Challenge
The 2007 Metrobank MTAP DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) held on April 2007 was highlighted by the outstanding performance of young math wizards from various public schools in the country.
Jose Rizal Elementary School in Pasay City composed of MJ Guiel Navarro and Ronald Allan dela Cruz topped the Grade 6 Team Competition. They bested the delegations from Hen. Pio del Pilar Elementary School (Makati City) represented by Kirven Molas and Topher John Viña and Zamboanga Chong Hua High School represented by Cathlyna Eden Saavedra and Maedeliene Uy, who were awarded second and third place respectively.
In the Fourth Year Team Competition, all public school contestants emerged as winners. Percival Byron Bueser and Jonas Cura representing Manila Science High School won first place. Runners-up were Gil Kenneth San Miguel and Euselinn Lumaban of San Bartolome High School (QC) and Judd Adonai Marley Lingan and Samantha Elaine Castillo of Cagayan National High School.
Metrobank Foundation president Aniceto Sobrepeña expressed that "public school students have again and again been giving their counterparts in the private sector stiffer competition, thus debugging misconception about public education in the country," in reaction to this year's list of winners.
Other MMC 2007 winners include Carmela Antoinette Lao (St. Jude Catholic School, Manila), Matthew Ng (Chiang Kai Shek College Manila), and Sarah Jane Cua (Pangasinan Universal Institute) for the Grade 6 Individual Competition category. Darren Mendell Sy (Chiang Kai Shek College Manila), Christine W.S. Cheong (Zamboanga Chong Hua High School) and Charlton Sean Gaerlan II (Baguio City High School) were the top three finishers of the Fourth Year Individual Competition category.
Now on its tenth year, the Metrobank MTAP DepEd Math Challenge continues to become one of the most prestigious math competitions among elementary and high school students nationwide. In partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), MMC seeks to encourage young enthusiasts to hone their mathematical competencies and contribute to promoting excellence in education.
