Metrobank Awards Young Math Wizards
Metrobank Foundation awarded 16 young math wizards during the culmination of the 2008 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge National Finals held on April 5 at the Metrobank Auditorium in Makati City
In the Grade 6 competition, Henry Jefferson Morco from Chiang Kai Shek College bagged the first place in the Individual category, while Hubert Yao of Iloilo Central Commercial High School – Ledesco Campus and Keefe Collin Tan of St. Jude Catholic School were awarded second and third place respectively.
First time national finals qualifier Uno High School represented by Samuel Christian Ong and Aileen Jennifer Cu bested nine other schools in the teamcompetition as they bagged first place. Chiang Kai Shek College represented by Henry Jefferson Morco and Shannon Christa Uy finished second, while Joshua Eric Romulo Uyheng and Jordan Hyeong-bin Cho of Bethany Christian School was third.
The Fourth Year competition saw the excellent performances of other first time national finals qualifiers, Xavier School and Ateneo de Manila High School who both finished first in their respective categories. Mark Benedict Tan of Xavier High School received the highest score in the individual category competition, while Andrew Noel Aragon of Ramon Magsaysay High School (Cubao) and Wayne Isaac Uy ofPhilippine Science-Southern Mindanao Campus finished second and third.
Jose Francisco Oracion and Diogo Miguel Moitinho de Almeida of Ateneo de Manila High School breezed through the Team Competition, making them the runaway first place winners in their category. While two different campuses of Philippine Science High School finished second and third – the team Jessamine Payba and Marian Rosary Grace of Western Visayas and Wayne Isaac Uy with partner Anne Marie Go of Southern Mindanao.
The 16 national winners were awarded by Marikina Congressman del Guzman together with DepEd Assistant Secretary Teresita Inciong and Sr. Iluminada Coronel, FMM of the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP). They were also joined by Metrobank Foundation officers led by its president, Aniceto Sobrepena, vice-chairman Placido Mapa, Jr. and Elvira Chan together with Metrobank Math Challenge’s new partner, First Metro Investment Corporation represented by VP Nimfa Pastrana.
The Metrobank MTAP DepEd Math Challenge continues to become one of the most prestigious math competitions among elementary and high school students nationwide. In partnership with the Department of Education (DEpEd) and the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), and co-presented by First Metro Investment Corporation, MMC seeks to encourage young enthusiasts to hone their mathematical competencies and contribute to promoting excellence in education
