Metrobank Foundation awarded 13 young math wizards during the culmination of the 2009 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge National Finals held on April 4 at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium in Makati City.

In the Grade 6 competition, Deany Hendrick Cheng from Grace Christian College bagged the first place in the Individual Category, while Sterling Alvin Tiu of St. Stephen’s High School and Ron Gabriel Navarro of Morning Star Montessori School, Inc. were awarded second and third places respectively.

The same schools emerged as winners in the Team category, led by St. Stephen’s High School represented by Sterling Alvin Tiu and Dielle Tio who bested nine schools as they bagged the first place. Grace Christian College represented by Deany Hendrick Cheng and Lu Christian Ong finished second, while Ron Gabriel Navarro and Liana Isabelle Baconguis of Morning Star Montessori School in Los Baños, Laguna were third.

In the Fourth Year competition, Quezon City Science High School represented by Jake Gacuan received the highest score in the Individual category, while Ricci Ryan Rojo of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Kevin Clyde Chu of Sacred Heart School of the Society of Jesus in Mandaue City were second and third, respectively.

Jake Gacuan and Victorio Vicher of Quezon City Science High School breezed through the Team Competition, making them the runway first place in their category. They were followed by Kevin Clyde Chu and Algie Jefferson Olmilla of the Sacred Heart School of the Society of Jesus as the second placers, and Emil Apostol I and Gef Soriano of Ramon Magsaysay High School (Cubao) as the third placers.

The 16 national winners were awarded by ASEAN Foundation Executive Director Dr. Filemon Uriarte, who also served as the guest of honor, together with MTAP President Sr. Iluminada Coronel Coronel, FMM. They were joined by Metrobank Foundation officers led by it president - Aniceto Sobrepeña, and vice chairman - Placido Mapa, Jr. together with MMC partner, First Metro Investment Corporation executive vice president – Roberto Juanchito Dispo.

“We hope that the long road to today’s National Finals have been an empowering journey for our young participants as they discover their God-given talents and abilities to overcome challenges. Like true champions, may they use these gifts to benefit not only themselves but also their families and the people around them,” said Metrobank Foundation president Aniceto Sobrepeña in his message.

Winners in both individual and team competitions received medals, trophies, and cash prizes —P20, 000 for the 1st placer, P15, 000 for the 2nd placer, and P10, 000 for the 3rd placer for the elementary level, while winners in the secondary level received P40, 000 for the 1st placer, P30, 000 for the 2nd placer, and P20, 000 for the 3rd placer, amounting to a total of P405, 000.00.

“Competitions by quirk of fate are bundled up on the same date, today. I agonized days to decide which one to participate in. We gave up the National Quiz Bee Finals because I felt that I will be more challenged here and the level of competition is much higher. I am glad I did,” revealed Deany Hendrick Cheng of Grace Christian College while delivering his response on behalf of the awardees.

MMC is organized by the Metrobank Foundation, Inc., Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), and the Department of Education (DepEd) with the support of the First Metro Investment Corporation (FMIC). MMC provides public and private elementary and high school students an avenue to hone their mathematical skills in an atmosphere of friendly competition, and at the same time, aims to contribute in the improvement of mathematics education in the country.
