The Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), and the Department of Education (DepEd) awarded the winners of the 2016 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) National Finals, held last March 19, 2016 at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium in Makati City.

Out of more than 1,200 students who competed in the regional finals nationwide, 50 students from 16 public and 13 private schools successfully met the “hurdle rate” in their scores leading them to advance in the final leg of the MMC.

The national finals showcased the mathematical competence of Grades 6 and 10 students who competed in individual and team categories, respectively. The challenge consisted of solving complex mathematical problems within 15 seconds through mental calculation and another round of 30-second and one-minute questions using pen and paper calculation. Answers were sent to the judges’ computer from contestants’ tablet computers immediately after the intended time allotment. The judges checked the answers on their tablet computer with “correct” and” wrong” buttons to directly indicate which contestant/s got the correct answer. The questionnaires were also posted real-time on MMC’s Facebook page to engage online users during the conduct of the competition.

Out of the 29 competing schools, 11 have produced their 1st ever national finalist. They are  Kalalake Elementary School – Center of Excellence (Olongapo City), College of the Holy Spirit of Tarlac (Tarlac City), Calamba Elementary School (Calamba, Laguna), Guinobatan West Central School (Guinobatan, Albay), Infant Jesus Academy (Kalibo, Aklan), Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, Inc.
